These delicious Apple Hand Pies are a perfect portable dessert, featuring a flaky, golden crust filled with sweet, cinnamon-spiced apples. With every bite, you'll experience a warm, comforting combination of buttery pastry and tender fruit. Whether served as a snack or a dessert, these handheld treats are ideal for any occasion, offering all the deliciousness of a traditional apple pie in a convenient, on-the-go form. Simple to make and irresistibly tasty!

Ingredients

  • 4-6 apples, medium sized, peeled and sliced thin

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

  • Pastry
  • 2 1/2 cups flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup shortening

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 egg, separated

Directions

  • In a medium bowl combine brown sugar, cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg. Toss with apples. Set aside.
  • In a separate large bowl combine flour, salt, cut in the shortening.
  • Add in the egg yolk and milk. Combine until completely moist, do not over mix as it will create a tough dough.
  • Divide the dough in half. Set one side on a flat floured surface and roll out flat. Try to make a rectangle shape.
  • Cut dough into a straight rectangle. Then cut your hand pies out, cutting a top and bottom for each. Depending on how big you want your handpies to be cut the dough out larger or smaller, just make sure you have a top and bottom that match.
  • Fill the bottom part of the pie with a scoop of apple filling, leaving the sides clear to allow for sealing. Top with 2nd part of dough and use your fingers or a fork to seal the sides. Repeat until all of your dough has been used.
  • Place on parchment lined baking sheet.
  • In a small bowl slightly beat up the egg white. Using a pastry brush, coat the top of each hand pie.
  • Bake at 375F for 25 minutes, until golden brown.
